Union
County offers a wealth of recreational pursuits. A hiker's paradise,
any adventurer will discover unlimited scenic beauty in the unspoiled
Chattahoochee
National Forest or the lesser known trails of Duncan
Ridge and the Benton
MacKaye Trail. Several waterfalls are within
a days hike including DeSoto
Falls, Dukes
Creek Falls and Horse
Trough Falls. You'll find many opportunities for camping, hiking,
picnicking, gold panning and fishing.
Union county is 204,736 acres, with 97,843 of that being a
part of the Chattahoochee
National Forest. The counties population is around 18,000
with 700 of those folks living in the county seat, the town of
Blairsville. A recent addition to the county has been the North
Georgia Technical College, a 5.5 million dollar facility that
teaches everything from allied health to computer technologies
to hotel/restaurant management. This 48,000 square foot structure
offers state of the art classrooms , labs and meeting facilities
and incorporates the latest technology in every program.
For the water lovers, Union County offers many lakes. The largest
being Lake Nottely at 4180 acres with a 106 miles of shoreline.
There is also Lake Trahlyta the popular 280 acre lake in Vogel
State Park which offers swimming fishing and paddle boating.
Two smaller lakes are Winfield Scott and Lake Woody near Suches.
For the less adventurous who would rather drive then hike there
is the Richard Russell Scenic Highway. This 14 mile stretch of
road crosses the Appalachian trail and offers scenic overlooks
at elevations over 3600 feet, a must see during fall foliage.
