Colonel John A. Zachary, from Surry County in North Carolina, explored the area of Cashiers with his son in the fall of 1832. The following spring, they returned to build several cabins and became the first homesteaders in the area.
Two years later, the James McKinney family, from Pickens, South Carolina arrived and bought 600 acres. They kept cattle and horses on the mountain land through the summer and fall , then they moved the cattle and horses to South Carolina for the winter. Part of their property is now the High Hampton Inn located two miles south on Highway 107.
There have been many stories as to how
Cashier's got it's name but the most popular one is the story
of James McKinney's horse, a white
stallion, which he had paid quite a handsome sum for so he named
it 'Cash'.
Fall was approaching and it was time to herd the horses and cattle south for the winter, Cash was nowhere to be found so they made the trip south without him.
The following spring,
the stallion showed up as healthy as ...well a horse. Apparently
he had wandered south and found a good feeding in the valley.
So the
McKinney’s
started calling the area “Cash’s Valley”.
There is a little secret in western North Carolina along the southern ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it's the breathtaking beauty of Cashiers, Highlands, Sapphire Valley, Lake Glenville, and Lake Toxaway.
Abound with cascading waterfalls, emerald green valleys and rock faced mountains, Cashiers offer an unequaled "feel" of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At 3485 feet above sea level, Cashiers North Carolina has unique mountain plateaus not often seen in the Appalachians, with rock formations rising up to 5,000 feet . The higher elevation offers a cooler climate to escape the heat of summer, yet the winters are mild with perhaps a few snowy days to enjoy the beauty of winter without the hassles of long term snow and ice.
Mild year round temperatures make this an ideal full time place to retire with the range in summer being lows in the mid 50's, and summer highs in mid 70's to lower 80's. Winters not all that bad either with the average low in the mid to upper 30’s, to highs in the upper 40’s.
The area is abundant with pristine forests, fragrant Canadian hemlock, white pines, colorful rhododendrons, azaleas and mountain laurel.
Jackson County covers 491 square miles that have plenty of wonderful mountain lodging options and great activities to help you escape your everyday life.
There are two main roads through Cashiers, Highway 64 and Highway 107. North Carolina Highway 107 takes you north and south and Highway 64 takes you east and west. The junction of the two highways is known as “The Crossroads”. But it's the roads like Whiteside Cove Road and Bull Pen Road, that take you through the mountains to see the rock faced mountains of Rock Mountain, Chimney Top, Yellow Mountain, and Whiteside.
A wonderful, quaint, two acre park called "The Village Green" is located at the the crossroads and includes a custom creative playground, walking paths, local art work and a pavilion for outdoor concerts and community events. Fanciful specialty stores and casual & fine dining restaurants are charming and savory.
If you enjoy fishing, you have great choices of lake Glenville, lake Toxaway, the Tuckasegee river or many other steams and rivers in the area. Or perhaps you'd prefer to take in the mountain beauty on one of the many hiking trails or one of the 250 waterfalls in the area. And if golf is your game why not try out one of the many classic mountain golf courses in Jackson County. Plus just fifty miles north of Cashiers lies the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which is the most visited National Park in the United States.
What ever you are looking for in the realms of relaxation you are sure to find it in the Cashiers area.
Creating a special memorable experience begins in the Western Mountains of North Carolina. Relax and enjoy what this wonderful community has to offer, that's what the mountains are for!
