Highlands North Carolina is located in the heart of the Nantahala National Forest, one of the two rainforests in North America which averages 80 inches of rain per year. A mountain retreat for over a hundred years, with hiking trails, horseback riding, canoeing, fly fishing, swimming, tennis, golf, white water rafting, and other outdoor adventures awaiting you.
At an elevation of 4,118 feet, Highlands boasts a range of biological diversity with scenic mountain vistas and abundant unpolluted watersheds. With over 250 waterfalls in the surrounding area nature is right out your back door. Some of Highlands most visited waterfalls are Bridal Veil, Dry Falls, Bust Your Butt, and Cullasaja which are located on Hwy. 64 between Highlands and Franklin. Then there is Glen Falls which is located on Hwy 106 toward Dillard.
Cultural arts are alive and well in Highlands, including three theater groups, a summer music festival and the Cullasaja Center for the Arts. The Center for Life Enrichment offers several classes each week on varied topics. and the Highlands Cashiers Chamber Music concerts Series are celebrating their the 25th anniversary. You can also find nightly antique and art auctions at Scudder's or shows at various art galleries. Or visit the American Museum of Cut and Engraved Glass.
Highlands has a diverse choice in culinary cuisines with over twenty restaurants to offer satisfaction to a wide range of palates, including five Wine Spectator Award of Excellence Restaurants.
The pedestrian friendly Main Street boast shops to please every shopper in the family including antiques, art, books, crafts, household furnishings, furniture, gifts, men and women's apparel, toys, wine and gourmet items, jewelry stores and up-scale boutiques. A broad range of retail selections not found at your neighborhood mall.
Accommodations range from historic inns, bed and breakfast, hotels and cabins. Homes rentals are available for rent by the week or month.
Home construction and real estate is Highlands top industries. Where residential areas are unobtrusive, low density, single-family homes. The year round population of the Highlands area is 3,200 which grows to over 18,000 in the summer mainly do to it's close vecinity to Asheville which is a 1 1/2 hour drive, Greenville Spartanburg is 2 hours, and Atlanta is 3 hours away.
The average maximum summer temperature in Highlands is 76 degrees while the average minimum winter temperature is 35 degrees.
